Established in 1836, proudly one of the oldest departments in the history of Mumbai, the department strives to fulfill the vision and mission of the college in contributing to the society intellectually, morally, socially conscious and spiritually oriented citizens. It has successfully achieved the following goals of

• Acquainting students with significant philosophical ideas and theories that form the basis of other disciplines.

• Equipping students with critical, argumentative, logical and analytical skills.

• Encouraging a spirit of rationality in philosophizing while appreciating and respecting differing philosophical systems and perspectives.

• Providing students with an ethical and spiritual framework for assessing moral decisions in different areas of life.

• Encouraging students to engage with philosophical essays and arguments of interdisciplinary nature that include areas of gender, class, caste, cinema, politics and religion.

With eminent faculty who built the philosophical and intellectual climate of (then) Bombay; Mrs. Borde, Dr. Karani, Mr. Randeria, Dr. Ookerjee (to name a few), Wilson College is the only co-ed college in South Mumbai to offer six papers in Philosophy at the third year level.

The courses offered in first year is Moral Philosophy, Social- Political Philosophy and Ancient Indian, Greek and Medieval Philosophy at second year and Contemporary Indian –European Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, Living Ethics, Logic, Textual Study of Plato’s Republic and Phaedo additionally, it is the only college to offer the unique course on Philosophy and Film at the third year. The syllabus is a balance of ancient philosophies as well as contemporary sensibilities much needed for building global competencies.

Activities

A vibrant student involvement in organising department programs, contributing to college magazine, seminars, film club, field visits, participation and competing in academic conferences provides a platform for students to build their leadership skills, practice the principles of logic and critical thinking, understanding of different ideologies that leads to acceptance of self and other traditions and applying moral and spiritual principles for conflict resolution and social emancipation in an objective manner. They are able to summarize and interpret complex philosophical ideas through writing essays, presentations and research papers that makes them ready for careers in teaching, mass media, HR, management studies, public policies (to name a few).

Department has collaborated with prestigious institutions like Goethe Institut, Centre for Study of Society and Secularism, Bombay Philosophical Society, Indian Council of Philosophical Research (to name a few).

Regular guest lectures, enrichment courses in themes of Existentialism, Karl Marx’s Philosophy (to name a few), Certificate courses in Local Diversity and Screenplay Writing aim to take classroom learning beyond the syllabus.

The department is committed to inclusion of persons with disabilities, visually challenged students are offered the option of a syllabus that enhances their abilities of logic and critical thinking as well as papers like film and philosophy are made accessible that enriches the experience of all learners in class.

Research Interest:
Clinical Psychology.

Short Biography:
Basic Psychological concepts are introduced in different papers of psychology in the first year and second year level.Students are encouraged to ask questions and raise issues for discussion to generate interest in the subject.At times, syllabus related films and videos are screened. Field visits are also organized to nearby institutions like Sadhana on Sophia College Campus to enable a better understanding of the subject.
