Although the Department of English, Wilson College was officially established in 1836, English was among the first subjects taught by our founder the Revd. Dr. John Wilson and his wife Mrs. Margaret Wilson in 1832, when they first made their foray into education in Mumbai.
The Department of English now offers a range of courses including Literature in English of various periods in history, Indian and American Literature, Literary Criticism, Mass Communication, Communication Skills, Popular Culture and Film and Literature.
Literature offers insights into culture, society and politics across the globe and tracks the development of ideas, philosophy and the human psyche across ages. The study of Literature leads learners to an understanding of the significance of literature in defining culture, the human being, value systems and helps build empathy. Critical thinking, one of the higher order skills, is among the primary objectives of the department.
With the vocational focus of courses like Mass Communication, Business Communication, Popular Culture and Film and Literature, literature graduates are job ready and can also easily gain admission into a wide array of higher education programmes both at Universities in India and abroad.
Excellent co-curricular activities in the form of regular Masterclass series, guest lectures, creative writing workshops, readings and talks by visiting writers and filmmakers, general workshops, the VRG (Virtual Reading Group on Discord) and the Virtual Movie Club(On Discord) Graduates of the department have a range of employment opportunities in publishing, media, law, education, politics, advocacy and others.
Ms. Vinita Mathew is the head of the department, who has completed her doctoral research with the University of Mumbai. She has presented and published research papers at various conferences. She teaches Communication Skills in the first year, Mass Communication and American Literature to second year students and 19th Century Literature as well as Renaissance Literature to TYBA students. She is the Chief Editor of the department magazine, The Literati.
Ms. Veronica Bhonsle too is a senior faculty member. She is an approved post-graduate teacher. She teaches Communication Skills at the FYBA, Business Communication and Indian Writing in English to SYBA students and Renaissance Literature and Literature Criticism to TYBA students.

Short Biography:
To make the learning experience in the classroom and on campus relevant, useful, and value-added for the students. While covering the prescribed syllabi within the stipulated time frame, I enjoy introducing students to the pleasures of reading and analysis, and encouraging them to express themselves creatively. I attempt to integrate interesting and innovative teaching-learning techniques in the classroom, while mentoring and building rapport through co and extracurricular activities.

Gender Studies, Literary Critical Theory, Indian English Literature, Film Studies, Business Communication, and Communication Skills.
Short Biography:
I have completed my education from the University of Mumbai as well as SNDT University Mumbai and started my teaching career in 1996. My experience as a teacher over the years has enabled me to identify the needs of students in the constantly changing teaching-learning environment. This has motivated me to adopt innovative and interesting teaching methodology which includes interactive sessions, extracurricular activities, and extensive use of media. As a teacher who also has to take on the role of a mentor and guide, I believe in encouraging students to find their own path with adequate stimulus where required and necessary. This I believe and hope will empower them to handle challenges rationally and contribute to their overall development.

Critical Theory, Urban Fiction, Literatures of Trauma, Film Studies, Refugee Literature.
Short Biography:
Ms. Glynis Machado joined the Department of English in 2023 and has since contributed to both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) programs through her teaching and academic mentorship. Her pedagogical approach involves bridging the gap between theoretical discourse and practical experience, thereby fostering a more engaged and analytical learning environment. In addition to her instructional responsibilities, Ms. Machado was instrumental in the curation of the revised UG and PG syllabi in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Through her contributions, she continues to support the department’s commitment to academic excellence and the advancement of literary scholarship.
