Press Release - Commemorative Postal Stamp......

December 11, 2007 was a historic day for Wilson College, as a long cherished dream was fulfilled. The Department of Posts, Government of India, honoured the college during its 175th year celebrations, by issuing a Commemorative Postage Stamp and a First Day Cover. It is rare that the Department of Posts honours an educational institution by issuing stamp in its honour.

The function was presided over by the Chief Guest, Dr. A.D. Sawant, Pro Vice-Chancellor, University of Mumbai. The Guest of Honour was Mr. M.P. Rajan, IPS, Chief Post Master General, Maharashtra Circle. Other Guests on the dais were Mr. Prem Masih, Managing Director, United Church of Northern India Trust Association and Rt. Rev. Prakash Patole, Bishop of Mumbai, Church of North India.

The programme started with a welcome by Prof. Milind Nerurkar. The students from College Chapel rendered a Welcome Hymn. Dr. V.J. Sirwaiya, Principal, welcomed the guests with flowers and spoke about the contributions of various men at the helm of affairs in the history of Wilson College. He also noted that this was an auspicious day, being the 203rd Birth Anniversary of Dr. John Wilson and in 2004 on the very day the Postal Department had released Special Day Cover to commemorate the 200th birth anniversary of Dr. John Wilson.

Dr. A. D. Sawant while congratulating the college asked us to go ahead to meet the new challenges that higher education was bringing up.

Dr. M.P. Rajan spoke of the pioneering work done in the field of education by Wilson College and urged students and educationists to get interested in Philately as an educational aid.

The programme was very well attended with Alumni, retired teachers, the teaching staff and the students converging in large numbers. A vote of thanks was proposed by Prof. Ashwini Joshua.

The Department of Posts set up a stall to sell the Brochures, Stamps and First Day Covers with cancellation. All these were sold out within one hour.
